Afterthoughts

I am not advocating that anyone, least of all pilots, blatantly disregard rules. There’s a quote attributed to G.K. Chesterton that says: “Before removing a fence, always pause to ask why it was placed there in the first place...” Living by the rules requires thought and judgment. This seems ironic, doesn’t it? We sometimes want rules to absolve us of responsibility, thinking we need only practice obedience. But that philosophy has historically caused terrible disasters. Blind obedience to rules is never good enough because rules can never adequately handle the relentless chaos of reality.

Soon after the events described in this story, the Canadian ATC system transformed into a crown corporation called NavCanada and things began to improve. The old bureaucratic attitude used to be: “Airplanes aren’t colliding so I am doing my job.” Under NavCanada, a new service-oriented attitude emerged that seemed to say: “How can we help our customers, the pilots and their passengers safely and efficiently reach their destinations?” This new philosophy was a breath of fresh air. Well-trained, well-motivated humans prove time and again that the creative, responsible thinking of carbon-based units, rules.

As it should.
